The European Commission adopted a set of proposals to make the EU’s climate, energy, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
“Fit for 55” targets
In order to achieve the 55% greenhouse gas emission by 2030, the European Commission has formulated targets and indicators:
recycling rate for municipal waste should be raised to 65% by 2030;
to increase the recycling rate of packaging waste to 75% by 2030;
improve permanently the EU waste legislation, while maintaining the EU waste hierarchy, the order of priority with the best environmental impact, starting with prevention and preparing for re-use and recycling and energy recovery;
proposes minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility – rewarding producers who place environmentally friendly products on the market and encourage the recovery and recycling of end-of-life products.
